South Island Grom Series
![]() Cody McCusker Cody McCusker convincingly won the U16 Boys division of the South Island Surfing Grom Series held at Taylors Mistake on Saturday. With event organisers choosing to move the contest to the more sheltered Taylors Mistake the grommets were rewarded with pumping two to three foot peaks for most of the day. With the sun belting down, McCusker who made a somewhat slow start during the early rounds became a wave magnet in the Under 16 final, stringing together a series of long forehand waves that showed McCuskers ability to carve on rail back into the pocket. McCusker now has two wins, in this three event series, and no doubt he will be looking for a clean sweep with the next event due to be held in Dunedin next month. ![]() ![]() Max Cooke (New Brighton) used
superior wave selection and smooth style to take out the Under 14 boys
final. Jackson Carpinter placed second, Harrison Whiteside third with
Jared Crawford finishing fourth.
With the Northside Boardriders Water Patrol on hand to keep an eye out for the young Under 12 Boy’s, all proved they were will be standouts in the future. Rory Edmonds was to classy for his opponents taking 1st place. Double finalist Harrison Whiteside took second spot with Nick Tuhikarama third and Max Marshall in fourth. ![]() The Girls age groups were combined this year. Kristi Zarifeh (Under 16, Sumner) won the girl’s final, Alethea Lock (Under 16, Sumner) second, Kate Nicolson (Under12, Kaiapoi) third, Mackenzie McNeill (Under 14, Kaiapoi) fourth and Alescia Whitfield (Under 14, New Brighton) fifth. ![]() We think this could be Jack Hawke The series will conclude with the third and final event at St Clair Beach in Dunedin on 30th January 2010. The event, also known as the 'Analog little Humans Surf Comp' is one of the key starting points for kids looking to establish themselves as competitive surfers. The early low tide produced some small difficult conditions that improved to a nice half to one surf meter as the tide rose. This year’s event attracted record numbers in the year 6 and under division. Some of these kids were having their second and third years in the division, one in particular was Henry Hawke who after finishing 2nd last year produced an unstoppable performance to take the year 6 title from fellow Discovery One student Conor McLennan. The year 8 girls division was again won by the year 7 student from Kaiapoi North school Kate Nicolson. Kate had to fight hard against Georgia Calcutt from Redcliffs School; the key to the win was the ability to link at least 2 turns on the waste high waves. The year 7 boy’s final was a one man race, Nick Tuhikerama from South Brighton School picked up a good scoring first wave and never looked like being beaten. Tuhikerama was also in the year 8 boys final where he finished 2nd to Sumner schools Max Marshall. This heat was by far the best of the day with one good wave being caught by all four competitors the difference being Marshall’s good 2nd scoring wave. All the first place division winner’s were put into a draw for a $1200 development package that includes Gravis footwear, Analog clothing a 7th wave wetsuit and 2 two hour video coaching sessions, this years lucky recipient was Nick Tuhikerama. as he throws his stick into the most critical parts of the wave to gain

Grommet; Noun, Young surfer under the age of about eighteen. Prone to beatings by other members of the surfing fraternity, Supposedly in a lighted hearted manner. Sometimes it is difficult to distinguish whether this form of bullying is about keeping old unfit farts a few higher steps up the ladder. Refferred to as 'Grommet Abuse'. Note a group of grommets ganging up on another grommet is another form of grommet abuse seemingly about the establishment and or retaining of a pecking order. Intelligence has little to do with this surfing culture phenomenom its more about brawn and bashings than brains. |
