A Surfer and Artist of Aotearoa
Patrick Bonner
Patch holding one of his paintings outside his home studio.

Patch checking out the surf at Waikuku. Creating patterns across a dawn surf..

A left hand break that Patch has found not too far away and really close to his heart for quality waves.

Some of this
article about Patch is taken from an article appearing in Slide Magazine.

Nat Parsons

Nat's 23 years old and surfs mostly the St Clair channel in good old Dunnos. He surfs mostly with good mate and tow in partner T funk. He started surfing cos he was going to get the grom bash  if he kept on body boarding.
His sponsors include Parsons Surfboards, RPM clothing, Ocean and Earth as well as Board Base Surf Shop in Dunedin.
For Nat conttests are about catching up with friends and hopefully getting through a heat or three. Losing is just another part of it.
Nat's travelled to Tahiti, Australia, South Africa and Invercargill. He's also represented Aotearoa - New Zealand. Which means he can lay claim to being one of New Zealand's best surfers  - at some stage!
Nat reckons that politicians need to get a real job - perhaps even one like pruning pine trees - that is if they could cut it!!
For Nat wax is good if its Brazilian and his favourite food is his mum's cooking which he manages to get when he's home on holiday!

Sam Dunfoy

Sam (surfing Meatworks) reckons that the best thing about
New Zealand is The South Island.

Nash Robertson

Richard Christie

Richard Christie hails from Mahia Peninsula on the East Coast of the North Island. These shots were taken of Richardo loosening up in the waves of Blackhead Beach. Richard is currently  NZ Junior and Open National Champ. His sponsors include Quiksilver, Lost, Globe and Magma.

Patrick Bonner is a gifted artist and musician.
He has been surfing for many years and in the past decade he has been turning some of the magical surf spots that he has ridden into paintings.

“The artistic side of me is something that has always been there, from playing the guitar, to making pottery and painting.  I find that painting is a great way to visually express all that surfing in New Zealand offers.  The perfect uncrowded setups that are still here, the adventure and the beauty of our coastlines and the unique light, colours and contrasts of our beaches and landscapes in New Zealand.”
An average sized painting of about 1200mm x 510mm will take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks to complete. “Starting with the initial idea, (usually after surfing somewhere off the beaten track )  I will choose the size and shape canvas to suit and start painting the rough outlines and colours.  I build colour, depth and perspective by a continuous process of applying glazes and layers of paint to achieve light and atmosphere.”
His paintings are nearly all lineups or waves. They are often an interpretation of spots that he has surfed around the South Island. He uses artistic license to modify a variety of features including landforms and vegetation yet the spots still retain a recognizable identity which make them distinctly South Island. Even if you’ve surfed extensively around Te Wai Pounamu (The South Island)  you might have difficulty recognizing some of these semi secret breaks. Patch is however happy to talk about the spots and share his experiences of surf discovery. He has stories about  crossing flooded West Coast Rivers with a back pack and a surfboard, surfing remote waves in South Westland that have never been surfed before. ....

He lives with his family on a tree nursery in North Canterbury and his home gallery features as a part of the Waimakariri Arts Trail.

Nat Parsons

Nat Parsons was the very first profile on this website about four years ago. The editorial team reckons he deserves more coverage cos he's such a complete surfer.
Nat reckon's the best surf he has ever had Was Mangamaunu at 3 feet with just him, his dad and bro Sam out.
(Sounds pretty cool to us Nat!)

      Sammy D

Sam Dunfoy surfs because there's nothing else to do in Kaikoura. His best move is a full on chop up and he competes regularly because he thinks that he's cutting it!
He's won video vouchers but had them taken off him.
The best surf he's ever had is any of the Kaikoura breaks pumping with local KBR boys to go surfing with.. he really likes it when all the campers leave and the locals get the waves to themselves.
His sponsors include Reef, Xcel, and Kaikoura Surf.

          Nash

Nash surfs cos its "sweet" and if he didn't he'd probably be a street rat. His sponsor is Barnz at Kaikoura Surf. Nash reckons his best move is a couch turn. Strong rumours are that Nash has won the Jack Pot on the pokies more than a few times.

The best surf he's ever had is Manga at 4 feet with all the Kaikoura crew.
Nash reckons that he really likes sunblock and that surfaotearoa is great cos it features heaps of South Island surfers and material.
